The
celebrated poet T. S. Eliot once lamented
"Where is the life we have lost in living?
Where
is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Whom
is the knowledge we have lost in information?"
The information we gather from books, from preceptors
and through observation must be correlated, classified
and assimilated to gain knowledge. The knowledge we
gain must widen our outlook and endow us with wisdom,
with the capacity to think, judge and decide.
Search and research are the essence of academic life.
Both the individual and the institution must progress
towards adaptation of a social ethos through slow, gradual
and honestly planned efforts.
Stagnation is a process that can set in as much in the
mental as in the material world. Stagnation in the mental
world results in blurring of thought and vision arrests
intellectual progress. An academician has to be like
the mythical phoenix, ever ready to resurge with an
enriched mind to claim the title and privilege of being
a preceptor. Chetana aims at offering the incentive
to our faculty to rise from complacence and contentment
and reach new heights in Intellectual culture.
It is also hoped that this attempt would not only rekindle
the urge in my colleagues to pursue their research,
but also pave the way to useful interaction with researchers
in their respective fields from other institutions as
well.
At the end, I submit that this is an honest academic
effort, initiated with high ideals and hopes that we
will reach new heights. May I request our readers for
a sympathetic but frank appraisal?
I thank Shri Ramnath G. Kare, President, Vidya Vikas
Mandal and all the members of the Standing Committee
for encouraging us to take up this venture. I sincerely
thank all my colleagues who have contributed articles
and papers at extremely short notice. I have no words
to express my gratitude to
Smt. Prita D. Mallya for the pains she has taken in
shaping this journal as the editor.
